TALLGRASS PRAIRIE PRESERVE

The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is located near Strong City, Kansas near US Highway 50 and Kansas State Highway 177 in the heart of the Flint Hills. The nature preserve features free range bison, a one-room schoolhouse, historic ranch house, and hiking trails. Best of all, it's free.

The highlight of the preserve is a chance to view bison in the wild. Signs warn visitors to keep a distance from them as there are no fences between the bison and the hiking trail around them. I got a little closer to them than recommended and you can be sure I "tip-toed" my way past. None of them tried to charge me or acted aggressively, a few of them stopped to look at me but then went back to munching on grass.

Another highlight of the preserve is the old one-room schoolhouse.

There is also a historic ranch house dating back to the 1880s.

The preserve also features plenty of hiking trails to get a good walking workout in.
