BLACK JACK KS 070826

Battle Of Black Jack site - Near Baldwin City, Kansas. In June of 1856, abolitionist free state forces led by John Brown defeated proslavery forces at the town of Black Jack, on the Santa Fe Trail in Douglas County. This proto Civil War battle was also in retaliation for proslavery forces sacking Lawrence less than 2 weeks earlier. The house shown in the photos was built after the Civil War at the battlefield site by an abolitionist who had been one of John Brown's men that day. The site is a National Historic Landmark.
